Malta & Gozo
It took me about 30yrs to head back to Malta & Gozo. I’d talked about it to my wife for many years extolling it’s virtues. Pressure was on. Would I still like the islands from my teenage years? Would she see it in the same light?
Thankfully to my delight both of us really enjoyed the trip. It might not be for everyone. It’s a sightseeing island not a lie by the beach with a cocktail in your hand type of break.
It’s an island stuck mid-mediterranean and has managed to maintain both a European and North African vibe. Where it is situated has meant it has been a strategic location for feuding empires and wars over the centuries.
This is what makes it so enjoyable. Immerse yourself in the narrow streets of Valletta. Take a boat trip round the Grand Harbour. Another boat trip to the small fishing village Marsaxlokk. Yet another boat trip over to the small and chilled island of Gozo passing it’s little brother Comino.
The island offers excellent local transport which is very cheap. This will get you into the wee nooks and crannies of the islands with ease including an unmissable visit to the old walled city of Mdina.
Be warned though, you might want to avoid St. Julians & Paceville unless you are after a bit of hectic nightlife!!!!
For those photographic buffs the beautiful limestone architecture changes colour in different light and times of day giving ample opportunity for great images with a vivid blue sky and clear azure coloured sea.
It’s safe to say i’ll be back!!!
